Welcome to the Capital City Garrison!
The 501st sprang from small beginnings in the Ottawa area when a few members became aware of each other in late 2004. The group started to make appearances locally. The first "major" event was to assist in the "Power of the Force" toy line launched by Hasbro. In May 2005, the group was contacted by Pepsi to help assist in marketing events surrounding the release of the final prequel Star Wars movie, "Revenge of the Sith". Additional events followed afterwards.
As the group began making more appearances, the membership started to grow. In 2007, the membership had grown to 14. This is when the local group, along with a lone 501st member in Kingston, decided to form the Capital City Squad within the Canadian Garrison. This permitted the group to become more self-sufficient at various local events and gave the local members a distinct identity in the 501st legion.
What we do
The Squad continued to participate in various local charitable events raising thousands of dollars in the process, and also helped other local events (Free Comic book day, various parades, etc.). All the while, the group continued to grow and in late 2009, the membership had reached 26 members.
In early 2010, the local membership voted to become an independent unit separate from the Canadian garrison. This encourages our own individuality, as well as helps all Canadian members of the Legion by adding another voice to its governing body, the Legion Council.
The name of our garrison continues to have the words Capital City for 3 reasons:
- One, it is a natural progression from what we used to be called, the Capital City Squad.
- Two, it references the location of the garrison and highlights it as Canada's Capital (the Ottawa region).
- Three, it ties in with our Canadian history. Since Kingston and its region remains within our boundaries, the name is an important reminder that Kingston was the first capital of Canada from 1841 to 1844 before the capital made it's way to Ottawa in 1857. We are proud to tie both cities together in this fashion.
